People have been told it is possible to make savings on the cost of their energy bills by taking steps such as seeking a better deal and making changes in their household.

The advice comes from Confused.com and follows the recent price rises announced by Scottish Power, which indicated that electricity is to see a ten per cent increase, while gas usage will be 19 per cent more.

Energy analyst for the website Lisa Greenfield stated consumers may be wise to opt for a capped or fixed tariff as other energy providers are likely to follow the lead of Scottish Power.

"We always advise shopping around as a way to reduce your bills and switching to an online tariff and paying by direct debit is the easiest way of saving a few pounds," she said.

Ms Greenfield added consumers might also wish to consider improving the insulation of their home, as this could also help them save money.
